THE NAME LX...
LX is the Roman numeral for 60 so it’s no coincidence that Vespa
has applied the LX nomenclature to it’s new series of classic
Italian scooters. The Vespa LX is the 139th Vespa and celebrates
almost 60 years of Vespa scooters. Ever since it first appeared in
1946, the Vespa has remained a favourite of generations. The Vespa
started the scooter phenomenon and went on to sell nearly 17
million units in five continents. Its design and technical features
have been regularly updated over the years, but two things about
the Vespa have never changed – its inimitable style, and how easy
it is to ride. The new Vespa LX replaces the Vespa ET series first
launched in 1996. The ET allowed Vespa to introduce modern features
such as automatic transmission but wisely they maintained their
traditional Vespa style. The Vespa LX retains the features that have
made the Vespa one of the world’s best-known vehicles — stylish
design, absolute comfort, solidity, optimal performance in town use
and twist-and-go (no gears) ease of use. The all-steel body sets
the Vespa LX apart from any other scooter produced today. The
advantage of the welded steel body is that it offers unmatchable
rigidity and steering precision. The Vespa LX is available is three
engine sizes. A 50cc 2-stroke model, a 50 cc 4-stroke model, plus
124cc and a 151cc 4-stroke models. Nearly 60 years have passed
since the innocuous little Vespa liberated a ravaged Italy and
today Vespa continues to liberate generations around the world.
TECHNICAL
In this column you'll find general technical info about the LX
L.E.A.D.E.R.- & HI-PER 2/4 engines.
PIAGGIO'S LOW EMMISION ADVANCED ENGINE RANGE or L.E.A.D.E.R.
Scooters of the latest generation need to be equipped with engines
that simultaneously fulfill the most demanding customer
requirements, suit the broadest range of vehicle concepts, and are
environmentally friendly. Keeping in mind this complex scenario, a
new family of 4-stroke engines has been conceived, developed and
tested by the PIAGGIO engineers: these are the LEADER engines
PIAGGIO's Low Emission ADvanced Engine Range. LEADER is a new
family of 4-stroke Single Over Head Camshaft (SOHC) engines,
comprising: - 125cc, 150cc, 200cc, 250cc displacements - 2- or
4-valve configurations - air or liquid cooling - drum or disk rear
Design The PIAGGIO LEADER engines are high-tech machines conceived
for users of the 21st century. These engines are fully designed and
optimized with 3-D CAD, which ultimately translates into better
performance, with greater power, less fuel consumption and a
power-to-weight ratio at the top levels in the market. As the
acronym itself indicates, one of the specialties of these engines
is their extremely low environmental impact, both from the point of
view of gas emissions (all LEADER engines comply with the limits of
the EC Multidirective 97/24, Chapter 5) and from the point of view
of noise emissions (Chapter 9 of the Multidirective). This proves
that the LEADER engines and the EC policy are on the same
wavelength, aiming to a cleaner environment, a policy that in
PIAGGIO, thanks to solid engineering principles, translates into
ability to conjugate performances and care for the environment.

PM 56 SS
The new exhaust gives it a totally unfamiliar throaty burble, which
is more reminiscent of an old British single-cylinder bike than
anything. Early versions of the PM 56 did not have the same small
diameter tailpipe, giving them a marginally greater power output,
but overstepping the mark as far as noise was concerned.
G.P.R.
G.P.R. an Italian firm also makes exhausts for the LX 125/150.The
mufflers are available in different materials like alu, titanium
and carbon look. You can order them direct from them. Click on the
pics to go to there site.
